In the wake of the recent earthquake and resultant tsunami in Japan, fears have arisen to a serious health threat: radiation exposure. Fires burn at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan and nobody is quite sure how this drama will play out. If there is a meltdown in the reactor core, there is some likelihood of environmental radiation exposure. I live in California and it is estimated that an event of this nature would affect the West Coast of the United States within 36 hours. That means in less than a day and a half after a meltdown in Japan we could be exposed to radiation here half a world away. This poses an extreme health risk for milliions of Americans.
Chinese medicine has a number of medicinals in its Materia Medica that show protective properties against radiation. This has even been studied in the laboratory as radiation is used as an anti-cancer therapy in Western medicine. Herbs are powerful and should only be prescribed by a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist.
According to John and Tina Chen in Chinese Medicinal Herbology and Pharmacology (pg. 1119), there is a list of herbs with radioprotective qualities. I will reproduce that list below:
Can Sha (Excrementum Bombycis Mori) Silkworm Droppings
Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri) Hare’s Ear, Bupleurum
Chan Su (Venenum Bufonis) Toad Venum
Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) Sichuan Lovage Rhizome

As the World waits to see the outcome of the disaster in Japan, I hope you will take proactive measures to protect yourself from the real possibility of radiation exposure. Until next time, be well!
